Despite Ann Arbor's status as the midwest's oasis of diversity and LGBT acceptance, it was still quite an adjustment from the San Francisco Bay Area. When I first moved here, I was first astounded and then traumatized at how white the town seemed to be. After a few months I was finally able to recover and acclimate to my new surroundings. Then it started snowing - a lot. And one morning, as I was scraping the ice off my windshield with a credit card (it had failed to occur to me to purchase a scraper until it was obviously too late), my only thought was, "THIS PLACE IS LIKE ONE GODDAMN WHITE ONSLAUGHT AFTER ANOTHER."
